Charlie, a unique being known as a "humanzee"—half human, half chimpanzee—navigates the complexities of teenage life in America after being raised by human adoptive parents for fifteen years. His existence is thrown into turmoil when the terrorist group Animal Liberation Alliance (ALA), responsible for his mother's rescue from a lab, begins to interfere with his life. Charlie, alongside his bright but socially awkward friend Lucy, confronts issues of identity, discrimination, and the ethical questions surrounding his creation. As they attend high school, the duo faces not only the typical challenges of adolescence but also the extraordinary circumstances of Charlie's heritage.
