Nanoka Koyanagi, a grade schooler with a love for books but no friends at school, is given an unusual assignment: to define what "happiness" means to her. As she ponders this question, she encounters three strangers—an isolated woman living alone, a teenage girl struggling with self-harm, and a solitary old woman. Through her interactions with these unlikely companions and her unique bond with a short-tailed cat, Nanoka begins to explore the complexities of joy, connection, and self-acceptance.
