Suzume Iwato, a 17-year-old high school girl living quietly with her aunt on the island of Kyushu, encounters a mysterious young man named Souta who is searching for abandoned doors across Japan. Souta explains that these doors, when opened, can unleash catastrophic earthquakes caused by a giant supernatural worm, and he is a "Closer" tasked with sealing them to prevent disasters. During their first encounter, Suzume unknowingly opens a forbidden door, releasing the destructive force and turning Souta into a small, three-legged chair that once belonged to her childhood. Accompanied by the talking chair and a mysterious cat-like creature named Daijin that seems to guide or manipulate events, Suzume embarks on a cross-country journey to locate and close the remaining doors. As they travel, Suzume gradually confronts fragments of her own painful past while racing to stop the worm from causing nationwide devastation.
