Shoichiro Yamagata is a novelist who moves from Harajuku to Kinuta in Setagaya. He keeps living simply in a cheap apartment while enjoying chilled beer. One day he treats his neighbor Yamada, a bank employee, to a cabbage hot pot. Yamada is worn down by fear of restructuring and exhaustion with life. Yamagata responds by speaking about a way of living that he can personally accept.
