Satoru is the twelve-year-old son of a factory worker. Marin is the twelve-year-old daughter of a diplomat. They meet during a school visit to a factory with industrial robots and become fascinated by one machine called Monroe. The children return to the factory at night and begin teaching the robot about themselves. Their innocent bond helps awaken something unexpected inside the machine.
