Katsuo Minatoya, a third-class soldier, survives the sinking of the aircraft carrier Soryu during World War II and is rescued by the destroyer Yukikaze. Assigned to the ship’s cooking crew, he works under the gruff but skilled Petty Officer Kusunoki, learning to prepare meals for the crew despite limited resources. Facing the harsh realities of war, Katsuo adapts to the intense environment of the Yukikaze’s galley, located just below the bridge. His culinary efforts provide moments of camaraderie, like crafting a special rice dish for the crew. Through relentless naval battles in the Pacific, Katsuo’s role as a cooking soldier highlights the vital task of sustaining morale amidst chaos.
