In late nineteenth-century London, a homeless boy survives in alleys and earns coins by shining shoes. A murder involving a girl close to him brings him into contact with a sharp-eyed detective. His knowledge of the streets and keen observation give him a place beside the investigator. The case draws him toward hidden crimes spreading through the city. He begins working with other children on inquiries that cross class lines.
