In the sleepy countryside village of Asahigaoka, where the nearest bookstore is miles away, life moves at a gentle pace for the students of the tiny branch school. Hotaru Ichijo, a fifth-grader from Tokyo, adjusts to rural life alongside her classmates: Natsumi Koshigaya, a mischievous tomboy; Komari Koshigaya, her easily flustered older sister; Renge Miyauchi, a quirky and imaginative first-grader; and Suguru Koshigaya, their silent brother.
