The series centers on Chika Ito, a cheerful and sensible elementary school girl who enjoys cooking and baking, living with her older sister Nobue, a laid-back twenty-year-old who smokes, hunts for part-time jobs, and often finds amusement in the antics of Chika and her friends. Chika's energetic childhood friend and classmate Miu Matsuoka frequently teases others with her mischievous and crude personality while showing particular affection toward Chika through playful interactions. Matsuri Sakuragi, a shy younger girl with glasses who owns a ferret named John, often becomes the victim of Miu's pranks, leading her to cry or hide in embarrassment. Ana Coppola, an English girl who has lived in Japan for several years, speaks polite Japanese fluently despite pretending otherwise at times and owns a dog, frequently getting pulled into the group's dynamics and teased by Miu over her family name. The girls spend their days engaging in everyday childhood activities, seasonal events, and lighthearted exchanges under Nobue's casual supervision.
