Eiji Fuwa is a former journalist who has traveled widely. He becomes a temporary English teacher at a Japanese high school. His calm manner contrasts with the emotional distance he sees in many students. The school is full of problems that leave him unsettled. Marked by children he saw in war zones, he takes on the task of helping troubled students.
