Makio Kodai is a thirty-five-year-old novelist who dislikes social contact. Her fifteen-year-old niece Asa is orphaned after her parents die in a car accident. Makio had a strained relationship with Asa's mother. At the funeral, Makio becomes frustrated by relatives treating Asa as a burden and takes her in. Their new life together begins with grief, awkward distance, and an uncertain aunt-niece bond.
