Hachiman Hikigaya is a high school student with a cynical outlook and no interest in making friends. His teacher Shizuka Hiratsuka forces him to join the Public Service Club. There he meets other students with their own social problems. The club places him in situations where he must deal with classmates instead of avoiding them. The early setup follows an isolated student pushed into uneasy acts of service.
