Jean Valjean leaves prison after nineteen years and finds that society still treats him as a criminal. A bishop's mercy changes his path after a desperate theft. Years later, he hides his past while trying to live honorably under a new identity. Fantine, a poor mother separated from her daughter Cosette, falls into misery while others profit from her need.
